You started a website or blog because you thought it would be an easy way to make lots of money.

Or maybe you knew this would take work, but you now realize your approach was all wrong. You thought you had it all figured out from the beginning.

It’s OK, go ahead and admit it.

There’s no shame. Own up to how naive you were.

You’re not alone. We’ve all been there. And, sadly there are plenty of greedy shysters and assholes out there who are happy to prey on you and everyone else who doesn’t know any better.

They’re assholes and someone should call them out on it. I’ll do that later.

For now, this is about YOU. It’s about realizing what you’ve been through and figuring out how to mend your broken wings so you can fly again.

A common misconception is that you can only make money blogging when you write about blogging or making money online. We disagree.

We’ve featured bloggers who use blogs that matter to do some incredible things:

(If you know of any other amazing stories of people that have used blogs to make a living, email us and let us know. We love featuring people that are doing amazing things because of their blogs.)

Today we’re happy to interview Sarai Minick from the sewing pattern company Colette Patterns. Sarai uses her blog as a platform to share her expertise on sewing, give people free patterns, and grow the audience for her sewing pattern store.

In this interview you’ll find out how you can create a valuable product, give away great content to get traffic, and convert that to sales. No tricks, no shortcuts. It just works. [Continue reading…]

On Tuesday we launched a brand new course: How to Start a Blog That Matters.

To coincide with the launch, we’ve compiled a huge list of the topics suggested by all of you for our Million Dollar Blog Project, but weren’t the one we chose.

There are websites about nearly everything imaginable, but that doesn’t mean that they are all good.

At Think Traffic, we believe that anyone that puts in the right amount of focused effort can build an audience online, even if it is about an extremely obscure topic.

Don’t know what topic to start a blog that matters about? Here are 81 ideas to get you thinking about what you could focus (or re-focus) your site on.

How to Start a Blog that MattersThinking about starting a blog or reinvigorating an old one? Today we’re launching a new course called How to Start a Blog that Matters that can help.

This course is meant for three groups of people. This course might be for you if:

  • you’re thinking about starting a new blog, from scratch, or
  • you’re unhappy with the results you’ve gotten from a blog you recently launched, or
  • you’re doing OK with your blog, but want to re-brand and re-launch it to take things to the next level

In any case, the course is a step-by-step 90-day action plan for starting a blog that makes a difference.

Starting a blog is incredibly easy these days. Hundreds of millions of blogs are online today and thousands more are started every day.

Anyone can create a blog in 5 minutes, but very few people will create blogs that matter.

What’s the difference between most blogs and the select few that attract huge followings or otherwise make a difference in the world?

That’s a question I started asking myself long before I started my first blog. Since then, I’ve started three popular blogs, and I’ve helped friends and clients attract huge audiences with blogs.

I’ve also seen plenty of bloggers work incredibly hard on something that never takes off.

By studying these differences and through the work I’ve been doing for the past three years, I’ve developed a formula for building successful blogs.

This formula is what I used to create Think Traffic, CorbettBarr.com and Expert Enough. I have also used the formula to help a half dozen clients and friends launch or grow blogs that attract from 10,000 to 100,000+ visitors per month.

I created this course because I believe in the ability of blogs to change the lives of the people who start them and the readers who follow them. I have seen blogs change the lives of many of my closest friends.

If this sounds like a good fit for you so far, get full details on the course here: How to Start a Blog that Matters.

How Does this Fit with the Million Dollar Blog Project?

Think of it this way: the MDBP is for do-it-yourselfers. This course is for people who want each step clearly defined and scheduled.

People who take this course will also participate in the MDBP. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

The Million Dollar Blog Project is a group project and case study on how to create a successful blog. People have gotten incredible results from the project already. The information you need to create a successful blog is there, but you have be willing to put some of the pieces together.

This course builds on the MDBP and goes much deeper. How to Start a Blog that Matters is a step-by-step action plan. Everything you need to do to build a popular blog is spelled out in full detail. The course contains over 8 hours of video instruction and over 100 individual actions to take over 13 weeks.

Whatever you decide, my goal is to help you start a blog that matters. Whether it’s through this course, the MDBP or something else, I’m just happy to contribute to your success :)

Here’s the link to the course again: How to Start a Blog that Matters. I’m really looking forward to seeing some of you inside.

P.S. If you’re not totally sure if blogging is right for you, check out this post over at my other site today: 5 Reasons Blogging Might Not Be For You.

If this course isn’t right for you but we’ve helped you here at Think Traffic in some other way recently, we would greatly appreciate a tweet or share. Just click the buttons below. Thanks!

We just recently stumbled across Jeff Goins, who blogs at Goins, Writer, and were impressed by how many big name people read and share his work.

Then we heard he got 1,000 subscribers to his blog during the week he launched The Writer’s Manifesto earlier this year. Then we saw that he was also just featured as one of the top 10 blogs for writers by Write to Done.

We knew we wanted to hear from him about his multi-year journey towards his “overnight success”.

In this video interview you’ll learn how to get a book deal without writing a proposal, why first drafts are always bad, and why you need to focus on becoming a better writer.
