We have been absolutely blown away by the incredible creativity and ambition you all have shown us over the past five days. The response to our Mentorship for a Year contest has been off the charts.
Chase, Caleb and I have spent the past couple of days devouring the nearly 250 entries. You made us laugh, smile, think and feel. It was nearly an impossible task to choose just one, but in the end we have a very deserving winner.
I’ll review the winner in just a minute.
But first, I have a confession. We came up with the idea of this contest as a fun way to build some buzz around the launch of Fizzle tomorrow. But after the response from you all, we knew we had to change our plans.
We’re still launching Fizzle tomorrow, but we’re dedicating today’s post to you, the contest and the winners instead of to the details about the launch. I’m so excited to tell you about Fizzle — I’m more proud of it than anything else I’ve created in my career so far — but it can wait until tomorrow.
The truth is, you all showed exactly what Fizzle is about during the contest. The spirit of your entries, your drive, abandon and passion reminded us why we do this, what we’re building and working so hard for. Today we want to pay homage to that spirit above all.
(Note: we unabashedly believe Fizzle is the best home and catalyst for that spirit. So be sure to subscribe here or there to get an email tomorrow with full details and a special launch-day discount.)
If you could harness the energy, ideas, and passion from the almost 200 entrepreneurs above, it could power a battleship. It’s a venture capitalist’s dream waiting room, a think tank, a group of gung-ho go-getters who can’t wait for 2013.
It’s been fun, inspiring and surprising to follow–but I know we’re all just getting started. You have started 2013 with a bang and I just wanted to thank you first for offering up your challenge as a prize, but secondly for the side benefits: we all wrote out a business plan of sorts early in 2013. It’s an important step to get that plan out there, especially out of our own heads and down on paper.
We’re all a step ahead for accepting your challenge. It’s going to be a huge year. Thanks for getting it rolling.
We agree. Well said, Bradley.
First, a Heartfelt Thanks
We wish all 250 of you could win, and we wish we could work directly with each of you. Unfortunately we had to pick a winner from the group.
If you didn’t win this contest, we hope your entry helped you think about what you want to achieve this year.
We know some of you pushed your comfort zone a lot to create your entries. Some of you created videos for the first time. Many of you launched entirely new sites just for the contest. Some of you reached out to new people for support and advice.
Use that momentum. Let it carry you forward and help you make this year the year you accomplished something big and moved closer to your ultimate goals.
Let this be the beginning of something important.
Thank you all for entering our little contest, we appreciate every word, thought, song, video, poem, artwork and everything else you created.
Now on to the winner(s).
There was so much awesomeness packed in your entries, we couldn’t possibly just pick a winner. We’ll also be recognizing several others and giving away other prizes in addition to our big first prize.
First Place: Mentorship for a Year
Picking first place was an agonizing process. The entire Think Traffic team spent days reviewing your submissions against a set of criteria aimed at choosing the person we think we can help do big things over the next year.
In the end, our winner is someone we’re confident we can help and will have a great time working with.
The winner is…
Richard Boehmcke of MakeBetterVideos.com.
Here is Richard’s original entry to our contest:

These Made Us Laugh (in a good way)
A few entries that didn’t quite make the winner’s cut above deserve to be mentioned as well. These entries made us laugh:
- Chris Altamirano (“you win a catalytic converter“)
- Bobbi Emel (“just gettin’ something off my boob“)
- Brendan Baker (bromance mashup)
- Alexa Hart (“exposes” herself)
- Ernie Dempsey (a short story about how he saved my life – password is “thinktraffic”)
Thanks guys for making this contest fun
Chase, Caleb and I were all truly moved by the explosive creativity you all showed during this contest. Sincerely from each of us: thank you for reminding us what this stuff is all about.
I hope the work you did to put your pitch together for this contest will help you take a step (and another) towards making something you’re truly proud of.
More to come on the Fizzle launch tomorrow. Till then: go, do! Make your art, and make it exceptional.
