Proof that Epic Content Works: 6 Examples of Driving More Traffic

“Epic content is overrated!”

“If I hear the word “epic” one more time I’ll barf.”

“Sure…I have this pile of great content and this pile of lousy content lying around and I didn’t know which one to use. But after hearing this wise advice I now know that people want the *good* content and not the crappy content.”

It’s easy to dismiss the Write Epic Shit mantra if you’ve never tried it, or if you’ve never been able to make it work. Writing epic content sounds like a no-brainer, like everyone who writes online is already putting out their best stuff.

But most people still don’t get it. Epic content doesn’t just happen. It takes focus, observation and practice. It’s not easy, but it’s essential to growing a thriving audience online. It’s the difference between building a popular site and failure.

Over the weekend I asked Think Traffic email subscribers to share examples of how using epic content has helped them build a stronger online presence.

And The Winner Is…

We have been absolutely blown away by the incredible creativity and ambition you all have shown us over the past five days. The response to our Mentorship for a Year contest has been off the charts.

Chase, Caleb and I have spent the past couple of days devouring the nearly 250 entries. You made us laugh, smile, think and feel. It was nearly an impossible task to choose just one, but in the end we have a very deserving winner.

I’ll review the winner in just a minute.

But first, I have a confession. We came up with the idea of this contest as a fun way to build some buzz around the launch of Fizzle tomorrow. But after the response from you all, we knew we had to change our plans.

We’re still launching Fizzle tomorrow, but we’re dedicating today’s post to you, the contest and the winners instead of to the details about the launch. I’m so excited to tell you about Fizzle — I’m more proud of it than anything else I’ve created in my career so far — but it can wait until tomorrow.

Beyond Traffic: How to Measure What Really Matters

Traffic is fun to measure, but it probably isn’t what really matters to you or your business.

It’s easy to get caught up trying to attract more and more visitors, more social shares and more subscribers, but how do you know if those things are helping you accomplish what you really care about?

What if all the things you’ve been measuring turn out to be worthless? What if none of those visitors or subscribers become customers?

How do you know if you’re measuring what really matters?

Beyond Traffic

I’m obviously a huge fan of measuring website traffic and working to increase it. We’ve reported on our traffic statistics almost every month since starting this blog.

But I’ll be the first to tell you that traffic on it’s own is a meaningless metric. Traffic is just one part of a bigger equation.

You probably want to measure traffic, especially in the beginning, but you should also be measuring other important things.

Let’s figure out what you should be measuring for your site, and how to do it. Continue reading Beyond Traffic: How to Measure What Really Matters

How to Find and Do Work You Love

I’m a huge believer in the benefits of doing work you love. Nothing else has the same potential to change our lives, our societies and even the world.

Surveys show that over half of Americans are unhappy with their jobs. I remember being unhappy with my career, and how that negatively impacted every aspect of my life, from fitness to relationships to mental health to decision making and more.

Imagine how much happier and productive the world could be if everyone did something they loved for a living.

But for most people, figuring out what kind of work might make you happy is tough. Harder still is doing what it takes to turn your new career or business idea into reality.

From Theorizing to Taking Action: Make Your Next Breakthrough

It would be great if learning was all we had to do to accomplish big things, but we all know that action is the key to making progress.

So why do so many of us get stuck in the “theorizing” phase, never moving on to actually doing anything?

Dozens of potential reasons come to mind. Here are some of the biggest:

  • Uncertainty about what to do
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Fear of failure
  • Feeling like there’s always more to learn
  • Worrying you won’t be good enough to succeed
  • Good ol’ procrastination

Whatever the reasons, it’s OK to admit if you’re feeling stuck. We all spend too much time theorizing from time to time, and not enough doing. The key is to recognize when it’s happening so you can push forward to make a breakthrough.
