Think Traffic Monthly Report – October 2012

October’s over and November is in full swing. It’s time for another Think Traffic monthly report. If you’re new here, each month we recap the traffic/growth stats for Think Traffic and share what we’ve done and what we’ve learned.

We do this every month because we hope our transparency will help you build a bigger, stronger, more engaged audience for your own site. There’s a lot of snake oil and misinformation out there. Our goal is to always give it to you straight, warts and all.

Luckily this month there aren’t many warts to show. We shattered some records for Think Traffic, which I’ll get to below in just a minute.

Before we dive in, let’s talk about what we’ve been up to lately.

Growing, cautiously.

I’ve been building this little business of mine for over three and a half years now. Over the years I’ve started three major blogs (Think Traffic, Expert Enough and my former personal blog, which is now merged into this site).

My main business goal from early 2009 hasn’t changed much, but the scope of things has. When I first decided to start blogging while on sabbatical, I knew I wanted to build a “lifestyle business.”

Welcome back to another Think Traffic monthly report.

We have record numbers to share with you again this month and some exciting updates about the new project we launched a couple of weeks ago.

If you’re new here, each month we recap the traffic/growth stats for Think Traffic and share what we’ve done and what we’ve learned (see all the monthly reports here).

This is the report for September, 2012.

September was an exciting month around Think Traffic for a bunch of reasons. We ended up just shy of 68,000 visits for the month and broke last month’s record by 21%.

Each month we recap the traffic/growth stats for Think Traffic and share what we’ve done and what we’ve learned (see all the monthly reports here).

This is the report for August, 2012.

This month saw some major changes to the site, and a big bump in monthly visitors.

As you may have read, I decided to merge my three-and-a-half-year-old personal blog into Think Traffic (read the full details of the decision here). The merger was completed on August 25th, so Think Traffic received a little traffic bump from then on. Next month will be interesting as the first full month after the transition.

So far, we’re very happy with the response and results of the merger. Think Traffic feels fresher and more interesting because of the inclusion of bigger picture + entrepreneurship lifestyle content.

Each month we recap the traffic/growth stats for Think Traffic and share what we’ve done and what we’ve learned (see all the monthly reports here).

This is the report for July, 2012.

One of the hopefully interesting and useful aspects of these reports is that we show our raw stats (visitors, pageviews, popular content, etc.) each month, no matter if it was a great month or a mediocre one. This month happened to be a down month as far as traffic is concerned, so let’s talk about that.

We’d also love to hear from you in the comments: what do you when your site has a down traffic month?

When should you be concerned, and when is it nothing to worry about?

For Think Traffic this month, we attribute the lighter traffic to a few things.

Each month we recap the traffic/growth stats for Think Traffic and share what we’ve done and what we’ve learned (see all the monthly reports here).

This is the report for June, 2012.

If you’re new to Think Traffic, the site is a little over two years old now. We grew to 1,000 subscribers within our first three months and have since grown to a site that attracts over 42,000 visits per month as you’ll see in the report below. Think Traffic is also now a business that supports a team of two full time.

Our approach to growing this site has been fairly straightforward. No tricks, no “secret” tactics, never anything black hat, and no paid advertising.

Here’s our basic recipe for growing an audience online (please tell the social media gurus and SEO salesmen that it really is this simple). Every week we:

Welcome to another Think Traffic monthly report!

If you’re new to Think Traffic, each month we detail what has happened with this site and with our case study blog for The Million Dollar Blog Project: Expert Enough.

We like to share these updates hoping you might learn something from what we’ve done to grow our audience here.

Later in this report, we’re going to share with you one blog post formula we’ve used that is proven to get traffic and subscribers time and time again.

But first, a little about our month…

May was a pretty huge month for Think Traffic in a lot ways. The biggest of which was the re-design, which we unveiled last week. Our “mystery designer” will be featured in the upcoming weeks and we’ll discuss why we took our site in a different direction aesthetically than other blogs online.

We’ll have some very interesting stats to share about the new design as well. We’ll give you a hint: Think Traffic added more subscribers last month than any month before.
