Progress Journal

Huge progress over the last week, am really proud, especially as it was very sunny in London and I spent most of the day in the park with my baby daughter. So most of the work I got done after bringing her to bed between 8pm and midnight.

What I have achieved last week:
- register domain and set up website
- chose the "The morning after" free woo theme
- installed googleanalytics, clickystats and feedburner
- moved over my most popular content from my previous MBA blog (http://www.angelangie2008.blogspot.com)
- created lots of new content: a career guide to hedge fund jobs, sales & trading and management consulting jobs
- improved the design of the websites, i really like the way it looks now
- tweeted quite actively, managed to bring number of twitter followers up to 85 from 50 and also discovered lots of very interesting people to follow on twitter for content ideas and relevant news
- also engaged in conversation on other women in business websites such as The Daily Muse in NY
- for the first time went "public" by stating who I am on the "about me" page, this is a huge step for me as I have never used my name in blogging previously
- on a related note, shared my new websites with some friends for fedback for the first time, also a huge thing for me as I was hiding it before
- traffic is still low but up from 0 to about 10-15 people per day. I hope to get it to 100 people per day soon – too ambitious?

Goals for next week:
- figure out feedburner
- set up a mailing list
- add an investment banking career guide
- comment on at least 10 related websites, preferrably outside of the US

just added my mailchimp mailing list subscriber form on the website, yay!!

I realised I need to add the dates here myself, otherwise it looks like stream of consciousness writing!
Last week has been good, even though I have spent a lot of time outside in the nice weather. Major steps have been:
- set up mailchimp list – no subscribers yet. Probably need to place it more prominently
- found a lot of great websites and blogs on women in business and reached out to them, such as The Next Women and The Athena Network
- also commented more actively on other women in business websites which has helped me get traffic
- best source of traffic seems to be twitter where i announce my new blog posts using hashtags
- i had an old blog that got a lot of traffic still via one link to one popular post, which I reposted on my new blog, so I asked the guy to update that link and now all the traffic goes to the new blog which is great
Next steps: I really want to advance with my ebook but I keep finding myself more excited about communication, ie spending time on twitter, checking other blogs, posting my own short blog posts etc. As the ebook has a more long term payoff I keep postponing it. I really want to advance with it next week!

Oct 10th 2011:
I discovered the power of facebook! Yes I had read about it, but I really hadn't understood how much more powerful using your friends and acquaintances is over anonymous marketing to strangers. I had told some friends I was working on a couple of websites but hadn't really given them the URL or anything. I discovered the power of facebook by accident. My aunt was persistent enough to ask for my URL several times, I was reluctant to give it out as I felt my site wasn't good enough to publicize yet, but I gave it to her nevertheless, she gave the URL to my mum who gave it to my sister who posted it to her friends on facebook. Within an hour of my sister posting it to her friends on facebook, my traffic doubled!! I now realised how stupid I had been and posted it to my friends on facebook too, upon which my traffic doubled again!! Another benefit was that by sharing the link with some school friends, some people with related blogs started getting in touch for cooperation, and my business school's career service actually also got interested and shared the link with the current students at my previous school. So traffic is now far above where it was last week. I've learnt an important lesson. Use your family, friends and network!!!!

Have discovered a great new wordpress plugin: COMMENTLUV that let's bloggers comment while also promoting their most recent blog posts. I discovered this on the fellow MDBP blog "Ramblings of a WAHM" which I love, it is a great blog with lots of buzz and I am finding so many good articles there on blogging.
I need to start commenting on other blogs more. Progress has been slow these last two weeks because my daughter was sick, and also because I have another blog not listed here that I was working on more, I was writing an ebook that people can get to sign up and that is finally done so I can focus on this blog again.
