Need Some Motivation Right Now? Read This IMMEDIATELY

If you’re in desperate need of some motivation, we’re going to fix that problem, right here, right now.

Prepare yourself.

WARNING: I’m going to swear and yell a little in this post.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

You said you needed motivation. I’m going to do what needs to be done to get your ass in gear. NO EXCUSES.

If this isn’t the kind of motivation you need, leave now. You’ve been warned.

Alright.

Here goes.

Do you want some motherfucking motivation right now?

I SAID, do you want some MOTHERFUCKING MOTIVATION RIGHT NOW?

Do you want to get some seriously useful shit done today?

Do you want to get off your ass and start producing instead of wallowing in despair, depression, self pity, fear, doubt or whatever is holding you back?

Are you sick of not getting anything done?

Let’s DO THIS.

The point of this exercise is to give you motivation to do something right now. Don’t just absorb this and continue sitting around procrastinating.

TAKE ACTION.

Follow the steps below carefully.

  1. Quit bitching about how tired you are.
  2. The world doesn’t care.

And if you’re feeling depressed or down, stop feeling sorry for yourself while you’re at it. It doesn’t matter.

We all face obstacles. How you deal with those obstacles defines who you are and determines how successful you are in life.

Did you catch that? It was the secret to life. Seriously.

    Let me say it again.

We all face obstacles. How you deal with those obstacles defines who you are and determines how successful you are in life.

    Period. End of story.

  3. Read the quotes below. If you have a favorite quote or two you always refer to, read that too.
  4. Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75. – Benjamin Franklin

Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: if you’re alive, it isn’t. – Richard Bach

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. – Steve Jobs

  5. If the motivation you need is to work on building your own business, watch this video:
  6. I don’t care if you’ve seen it before. Watch it again.

Be warned, if you’re not working towards being self employed, this video might push you in that direction.

  7. Put a pot of coffee on or get some tea brewing.
  8. Try a bulletproof coffee if you need an extra kick.

  9. If you haven’t eaten something, eat a little snack now.
  10. For god’s sake don’t eat a fucking twinkie or some other junk food.

Eat something healthy. Eat some nuts or fruit. Take your vitamins.

  11. Do one of the following three things:
  12. A) Take a shower, OR

    B) Go for a brisk walk, OR

    C) Call the friend who most lifts you up and makes you feel great after every conversation. Tell him or her that you need a little pep talk. Put a 10 minute limit on the conversation.

  13. If you’re around people right now, go tell one of them how much you appreciate him or her.
  14. Just say, “hey, I wanted to tell you that I appreciate you because…”

If you’re not around people, think about something or someone you’re grateful for. Go over the reasons you’re grateful in your mind.

Gratitude is happiness. Happiness is motivating. Be grateful more often by thinking about who and what you’re happy for, or by telling someone.

  15. If you normally sit down to work, stand up.
  16. Standing up to work is motivating. It gets the blood flowing.

  17. Turn off email, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and whatever other social procrastination network you’re part of.
  18. Turn off the TV if it’s on.

    Seriously, TURN THEM OFF.

  19. Now, put on your favorite music playlist.
  20. Play something that gets you jacked.

Hint: try the playlist you use at the gym.

(If you don’t regularly go to the gym or workout otherwise, start doing that tomorrow. You have to be healthy to stay motivated.)

  21. List the top 3 positive outcomes of achieving your task.
  22. Think about what you’re planning to accomplish today.

Don’t worry about everything that’s holding you back from accomplishing it. Instead, focus on the positive things that will happen once you get it done.

For example, if you have homework to do, your list might look like this:

    1) I’ll learn something useful.
    2) I’ll make myself and my teacher proud of what I accomplished.
    3) I’ll get closer to achieving a good grade in the class so I can graduate and move on to doing what I’m really meant to do in life.

Write down the three things. Don’t skip this part. Make sure you focus on the 3 most important outcomes.

  23. Think about the part of doing this task that you enjoy.
  24. Most tasks have some enjoyable component to them.

Focus on what you like about what you have to do, no matter how simple or how small. Enjoy the very act of doing your task for what it’s worth.

  25. Now here’s the most important part.
  26. Lock yourself in a room with the thing you need to be doing.

Don’t leave until you make some progress.

Put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, or axe to the grindstone.

Stop looking for external motivation. Stop letting yourself procrastinate.

Start going through the motions of making progress. At first it might feel forced, but eventually you’ll get in the groove.

What to do if this doesn’t work.

We all have things to do that we really just don’t want to do, but have to for some reason. These are the toughest to find motivation for.

For these especially difficult situations, I recommend two things.

First, question whether or not this thing really needs to be done.

What are the consequences of not doing it? Can you live with the consequences? Is there any way to not do this thing?

Then, if you still conclude that this thing absolutely has to get done, focus on simply getting past it.

Imagine the relief of not having this thing on your plate anymore.

How will that make you feel?

Dig deep. See how quickly you can possibly do this thing.

Do it now and move on to stuff you really want to do.

Thanks for reading. Now go out and get something important done.

Please share this with someone else who needs motivation.

Brilliant post!! Love it!

Your final part particularly attracts my attention as I am personally passionate about deeging really deep to uncover ALL the roots of obstacles holding me back and then work dilligently on removing them…… for ever :-)

So, in addition to your good advice, here are a couple of things I’d do if I needed to motivate myself to do something that has to be done but I REALLY didn’t enjoy doing it:

I would block the time in my diary that I will need to finish the task at least a week in advance. This way I would prepare myself psychologically for it e.g. use the week to TRULY and DEEPLY accept it’s ok to hate it with passion, that it’s ok to realy not enjoy it while doing it, that it’s ok to feel and act in the most unpleasant way while doing it (unless it’s customer facing of course) etc. You get the picture…basically, to me it’s about giving myself permission to be honest even if it’d be “frowned upon” – in this case miserable and pissed off with an joyless task at hand . This somehow manages to take the edge of my dislike and turns the activity into a humorous one. And things get done :-)

In addition to the above, I sit down, remember and write down examples of a few similar times when I completed things I disliked and was satisfied with the result. This I look at daily during the week of psyching myself up for the task.

This second method also serves another purpose: it reminds me that I can do things I ‘hate’ and that such a skill will come useful many a times again. So, it’s about building a toughness that will serve me well on my way to building my dream.

And last but not least, I also use many NLP techniques (working with my submodalities) to reduce the effects my demotivating states have on me – and they work a charm! :-)

Thanks for the great post Corbett!

I’m now done with this particular procrastination :-) and am off to do some proper work :-)

The hardest part is just starting. Once you’re underway with a task/project, it’s so much easier to get back into the swing.

No.6 (b) & No. 10 in combination always does the trick for me. If the weather is poor, then simply blasting some pumping music and jumping around the room for a few minutes does wonders.

“Do it now and move on to stuff you really want to do.” Great anti-procrastination advice, because procrastination is rooted in the thought that we don’t really want to do what it is.

If you frame it as a way to move on to something else, that’s a big help. I’m sharing this with everyone I can.

Exactly what I needed today. I think I’ll bookmark this. I’ve been working hard and hardly seeing any results…and it’s easy to get discouraged. But I keep hearing people say to persist and just keep creating “epic shit” and eventually things will start to happen. I’ve been at this about 4 months and I have devoted HOURS and HOURS to my site and to learning as much as I can…and some days it seems really hard to justify.

This post really helped…and I love the video…that guy is on fire!

Thank-you!

Corbett dude, I seriously appreciate every single fucking post you have put up here. In the past few weeks I have been having some doubts since I started doing something that is somewhat foreign territory to me and this post and video tore me apart, opened me up, slapped the hell out of me, closed me up and kicked me into the streets of my mind and I’m insanely motivated.

All I can say is thanks for being awesome and a serious fucking motivator. If you’re ever roaming NYC and I’m out I’d be more than happy to buy you a beer for the words dude!

Reply

Here are some hacks I use to motivate myself:

I set the alarm in my phone to ring with a song that motivates me and that is loud enough to wake me up, I change this every week so my body doesn’t learn to ignore it (usually from Disturbed)

I jump out of bed and do some jumping while singing the song so I will not go back to bed

I drink water from a bottle I leave in my room while reading some instructions for the day in my mirror
http://www.thebravemanblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/2011-11-09_08-05-12_623.jpg

Then I read my goals that I have in my chalk board:
http://www.thebravemanblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/2011-11-09_08-05-30_726.jpg

I work out

I do breakfast while letting my body to cool down

then I get prepared to get to work and take off while listening to music that motivates me to set the pace of the day

When I’m feeling weak and want to fail I remember myself how it felt when I failed previous challenges because I gave up and how I felt when I achieve something great and remind me that I don’t want to feel that failure again in my life (something we did in boxing training)

I support it with music that motivates me (I always carry my headphones with me)

At night I take 30 min to disconnect with everything and I meditate to remember the things that I have to do the next day, but most importantly, the attitude that I have to keep during the day and when doing the challenges, how do I have to react when feeling weak and what do I have to do in difficult moments (much like shadow boxing)

I hope this can help somebody :D

If you have internal or external voices telling you that you cannot do something, the best way to shut them up it to just fucking do it!!

Thanks Corbett
I really needed that.
The 2 things I loved the most were:

1.The quote: “We all face obstacles. How you deal with those obstacles defines who you are and determines how successful you are in life.”
It’s well known and I think it’s true. It’s so clever in its simplicity. And it’s a good reminder as we’re often forgetting that everyone’s facing the same obstacles

3.Gary’s video.
That guy is an energy bomb and he always gets to motivate me. I’ve read both his books and his first one, “Crash it!” was a true motivator for me.

I’m adding your post to my secret motivational arsenal…

I will have you know that I have been putting off getting my room/office/car cleaned and organized for…..months. As soon as I finished reading this blog post, I got my room/office/car cleaned, started my laundry, cooked supper, emptied the dishwasher, and cleaned the floors. All in one day! I feel a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for yelling and swearing at me. It was exactly what I needed!

It made me smile and actually wanna do something. Funny cz it represents pure reality. Especially the video caption “I don’t care if you’ve seen it before. Watch it again.”
i said to myself oh i know it im not gona watch it again and then saw the caption!
Damn it hit me! I am lazy and need motivation.

And so I stumble in to this page at the break point of the term, when the stress and tiredness and the almost impossible urge to whine is floating in the air of my studio. Quite motivating, actually. It makes me feel sorry for the fucking crying, I know you don’t give a fuck, and I don’t give a fuck that you don’t. So, I’ll get back to work. Thank you.

Thank you Corbett for taking the time to put all the above togther…

Hey, I must say that this is something really motivating. I am myself a blogger who writes on making yourself for better and happy life. I have never read a post with such enthusiasm. The way you “shouted”, was brilliant, it gives a blow to me. Although I would suggest you to create a podcast or an audio file on this topic. It would really get 100% of the effect.

It made me to write another post on motivation and developing interest in ourselves. Language is rough, but I guess that is essence of this post. I wrote to developing positive attitude if you may wanna check at http://better-being.blogspot.in/2012/11/want-to-be-tension-free-lets-be-positive.html
The matter, although, is not as motivating as yours.

Keep writing! :)

This post reminds me of a ted talk by a woman (I can’t remember her name) who talks about the amount of energy needed to get up in the morning, out of a warm bed into a cold, dark room. She called it “activation energy” and it was a powerful analogy to what is required to getting any kind of thing done. I think this post helps push people out of that warm bed. Great work!

Okay I will:
When you have something to be done, most of the times you think “I’ll just do it later”
Change that, when this pops up think instead “I’ll just do it now” and go about it.
After a few days it will be programmed into your brains. ;)

I LOVE this Post!
Especially;
“Quit bitching about how tired you are.

Period. End of story.”

When I’m really having a pity party I tell myself that no matter how bad I think my life is, billions of people would think they won the lottery to have my life, petty problems and all.

A lot of us think just about our limitations that’s why we don’t take action. Motivation should come from our vision and goals in life. Great encouragement really to just do it and not procrastinate.
